ore than 100 scholars and specialists from top universities and research institutions from home and abroad attended the 4th International Symposium which was held online and offline at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) from November 5 to 6, 2021.

Entitled “Redefining the Global Good Governance in a Disorderly World amid COVID-19”, the symposium consists of keynote speeches and panel discussions. SISU’s Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies (SAGGAS) is the organizer.

The conference’s participants gave their own voices of helping resolve the existing risks and challenges of global governance. For instance, SISU president Li Yansong encouraged countries to strengthen cooperation based on mutual understanding specially in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Huang Renwei, executive deputy director of the Institute of Belt and Road and Global Governance from Fudan University, said China firmly upholds that the UN is at the core of the global governance system. He also emphasized that UN should focus on recruitment, power’s monopoly, agency in climate governance, tax for poverty alleviation and regional governance organization while the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is facing a lack of funds.

The conference’s attendees also pointed out that the growing unstable, competitive and intense relationship among countries leads to the world disorder.

For example, Huang Jing, Dean of the Institute of Country and Regional Studies at Beijing Language and Culture University, took the current relationship between China and the US as an example. She emphasized that China stands firmly to strengthen mutual support and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation to enhance bilateral ties.

“Only by upholding the ideology of peaceful development could area studies contribute to develop a better world,” said Dr. Jiang Feng, SISU University Council Chair, at the closing ceremony.

The previous three symposiums focused on the issues, such as “The Belt and Road initiative”, “A Community with a Shared Future for Mankind” and “Work Together to Build a New Type of International Relations”. The annual event aims to promote communications among experts and scholars from home and abroad, ultimately improving the development of a global governance system.
