Fabrizio Trifiro: Internationalisation and quality assurance in UK higher education

Summary: The UK higher education sector is one of the most internationalised in the world. The UK is the second most popular destination for students wishing to pursue their higher education studies abroad, and it is the leading provider of transnational education (TNE), that is higher education programmes offered outside the national borders. China is by far the main sending country of international students in the UK and the second largest host country of UK TNE. This lecture will look at what the internationalisation of UK higher education means for its quality assurance. It will outline the role and main areas of work of the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), focusing on how it is responding to the internationalisation of UK higher education both at home and overseas. Particular emphasis will be placed on the importance of strengthening cooperation amongst quality assurance agencies in sending and receiving countries of TNE in order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its quality assurance. The leading role played by QAA internationally in this area will be outlined, presenting a number of current initiatives aimed at fostering and facilitating cross-border cooperation in the quality assurance of TNE, including Chinese-UK cooperation in running schools and programmes.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Fabrizio Trifiro is Deputy Head International at the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in the UK. He leads on the engagement with international quality assurance agencies and the international student experience. He also leads QAA review teams looking at the quality of UK TNE. Fabrizio Trifiro holds a PhD in Political Theory (University of London), as well as an MSc in Social Research Methods (University of Sussex), a MA in Human Rights (University of Bologna) and a BA in Philosophy (University of Bologna).
