hao Peiyao a Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) student shared her United Nations Volunteer (UNV) experience with other SISU students in a lecture held by the SISU UNV club recently.

Zhao Peiyao, the lecturer and UNV club member, delivered a lecture to share her experiences at UN after returning from her duty at the UN Department of Global Communications.

At the UN, she was in charge of translating the English UN news into Chinese version and designing as well as operating several UN official websites. These websites include the official website for the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund and the UN News Committee.

She said that website designing was the most difficult part for her when recalling her UNV experience. She thought she would only need to translate the news script, but she found out that designing the website was also part of her job.

“Even though I had had a course about website designing before, and I yet don’t feel that I can do the web designing well,” said Zhao when facing this difficulty.

She then asked her undergraduate classmate to help photo-printing the textbook they had ever used in the class and read it whenever she was free. So that she can polish her skill of website designing, and better perform her duty. “Every bit of knowledge you learned in the past might as well be useful later,” said Zhao.

She said that the UN workers came from all walks of lives and races and the working pattern there is even more regular then any other internship she had experienced. She still misses her time working there and is now considering to seek for a career in the UN or other international organizations.

As a student organization that enables UN dreamers to communicate, the club equips the club members with the essential knowledge required by future UN volunteers. Except for Zhao’s lecture, peer lectures from those who have had UNV experiences were held by the club regularly, featuring first-hand imformation including UNV application, UN working atmosphere, and life when working at the UN.

Peng Qiongti, a club member and one of the lecture listener of the lecture said, "Thanks to the UNV Club for holding this lectures, making me and my fellow club members better understand the UN and the UNV.”

While Zhao has returned, Jin Siyi, a SISU undergraduate will soon go to the UN and stay there for more than a year as a coordinator of all the Chinese UNVs.

Jin’s interest in the United Nation came from the Model UN, a UN conference simulation contest in which each contestant acts as the representative of certain UN member countries to propose and vote.

As a frequent Model UN contestant, she said that she had long felt curious about the actual UN and its working patterns since her years in middle school.

After entering SISU, she entered the UNV club and took a very active part in club affairs. She participated in organizing several lectures and workshops and gained a lot of experience in management and activity operation.

Besides peer lectures, the UNV holds other activities including UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) workshops. The workshop invites NGO experts introducing and explaining these goals.

“The club enables me to get to know more UNVs, and make it easier for me to get a UN intern opportunity,” said Peng.

And this semester, she applied for the position she saw on the SISU UNV club post. And she was finally admitted as a coordinator of all the Chinese UNVs at the UN Beijing office for over one year.
