ISU students took part in social practice at home and abroad in 2018 summer vocation.
During the 71-day-holiday from June.30 to Sep.10, 2018, 1,041 SISUers from 13 departments travelled to more than 30 provinces such as Ningxia and Chongqing, and fifteen countries including the U.S., Korea and Uzbekistan. They did academic researches on subjects such as traditional culture, the Reform and Opening-up Policy and the Belt and Road Initiative. More than half of them did social survey or volunteer teaching.
They have made much progress. A ten-student team, for instance, had worked for their project Root, which tells the development of rural area and growth of teenagers in different languages. This project’s result was finally shown by means of essays, pictures and documentaries.
Another team aiming to promote knowledge of the laws among children in rural areas also made a documentary to show their achievements.
“I was quite surprised the moment I met those children,” said Du Yijin, a student from School of Education, whose team headed for Qinghai Xibusha for volunteer teaching.
“Yet later I found that they lacked teaching resources and still had backward teaching concepts. What I wanted to tell them initially seemed too far away from their life.”
“It helped me realize the significance of volunteer teaching;we bring the children some knowledge and they inspire us.” Du said.
Xiao Yuting, a member of Finalmente, the student drama troupe of SISU, still feels excited when she recalls her experience playing drama in Edinburgh.
“We met some difficulties, like being so shy when distributed leaflets on the street of Edinburgh,” Xiao said. “We are inexperienced.”
There weren’t many people present, yet they all tried their best to perform, and the half-hour-performance brought her an unforgettable feeling, she said. “It is quite unbelievable for me to act in England in English.”
