ppearing in the 10th century, A-Cappella, a form of singing by underscoring the songs’ lyrics with syncopated vocal percussion, was slow in rising to fame.
Parallely, members of Across, a student club for showing A-Cappella in Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), needed months of tough training for a nationally competitive show staged in July this year.
Though told the competition news late and challenged by close competitors, Across’s two-song performance in a short preparation was unanimously lauded by expert judges and won thrid place in the competition.
Unable to afford a professional training room, they started rehearsing their performance more than three hours per day in a crowded room rented from a hotel in the hot summer vocation. They kept training on a tight schedule until the night before the competition to ensure their each facial expression and eye contact looks perfect.
“A cappella is a very interesting form of music. I feel honor to be participators of the competition and it is a great experience,” Chen Xingtong said.
Across, founded in 2008, has held concerts many times, which included those at Shanghai Concert Hall and one titled Love A Cappella at Shanghai Culture Plaza working with Taiwan Okay Choir and other professional bands. In this semester, Across attemps to recruit among SISU freshmen to work on cooperation between the old and the new members.
