ecently, Center for Faculty Development and Office of Academic Affairs of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has jointly held a teaching experience sharing salon on the theme of “teaching students according to their aptitude, taking undergraduate education as the basis”on Songjiang Campus. The event attracts nearly 40 teachers from SISU and Songjiang University Teachers Union. The salon was hosted by Wang Huihua, deputy director of Office of Academic Affairs. Zhao Qiuyan, executive deputy director of Center for Faculty Development attended and addressed the salon.

The four speakers, Li Mei from School of English Studies, Zhu Lei from Institute of Linguistics, Tian Xiaoyong from School of Education, and Lin Bin from School of Japanese Studies, are all winners of the SISU Outstanding Teaching Awards with rich experience in teaching undergraduate. At the salon, they shared their teaching experience.

Language teaching is not limited to the teaching of skills it should be combined with humanity. ——Li Mei

Li Mei shared the experience of the humanistic reform in English Language education in School of English Studies with the theme of “Teaching Culture and Skills in English Education – the Training of Humanity”. She said that university is not only about providing knowledge and producing research results but also about cultivating students' comprehensive quality. By using the example of speaking courses, reading courses and writing courses, she explained how teachers could integrate humanity into the class to help students develop logical thinking and problem-solving ability, as well as sound personality. She pointed out that teachers should respect students when working out learning plans, which demonstrates the teaching principle“teaching students according to their aptitude”.

Teach a man how to fish rather than merely give him fish. – Zhu Lei

Zhu Lei shared his teaching experience with the theme of “the charm of language”. He believes that teachers of language majors should teach students how to learn a language rather than merely teach them the knowledge of the language. By taking the courses of “Phonology” and “Traditions and characteristics of language”as examples, he explained how to guide students to understand the principles of language, appreciate the beauty of language, and see the world through language. He also shared the story in his Latin lesson that he associated Latin with starry sky and mythology. He guided students to identify the constellations under the starry sky, and taught Latin through mythologies, which not only makes the lesson vivid, but also follows the principle of "taking undergraduate education as the basis".

Attention, interaction, extension. – Tian Xiaoyong

The theme of Tian Xiaoyong’s speech is “This is my way”. He divides his teaching plan into three parts: “Attention, Interaction and Extension”. In the "Attention" part, he shared six points that could arouse students’ interest: warm up, correlate, update, visualize, short pieces, and rich contents. He used different translations of "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." as examples to illustrate how important it is for teachers to refresh their cognitive structure, which also shows his ability to engage students in the class. He then listed four points that could drive students to interact: brainstorm, cooperation, debate, and speech, and shared the experience of “expanding class”to improve students' learning ability outside the classroom.

Remain true to your original aspiration when giving a lecture, and devote your youth to the podium. – Lin Bin

Lin Bin first shared her own experience in participating in the 3rd Shanghai Young Teachers' Teaching Competition. Then, she used the example of her Japanese translation course to explain the words “remain true to your original aspiration when giving a lecture”. She designs her course in line with the needs of different students and combines it with news, so that students can not only learn typical translation cases but can also understand the culture behind the language. She believes that language teachers should help students acquire broad and solid basic knowledge, professional and in-depth mainstream skills and irreplaceable practical skills so that they can spread Chinese stories and reveal the charm of China with personal charm.

The sharing salon was held in a warm atmosphere and the young teachers found it quite rewarding. Liu Jingjing from School of Chinese Studies and Exchange, Dong Linyi from School of Germanic Studies, and Zeng Yan from School of Business and Management and some other teachers had a lively interaction with the four speakers and received satisfactory answers. At the end of the sharing meeting, Zhao Qiuyan said that Center for Faculty Development would be willing to work with relevant departments to build a sharing and communication platform for the development of young teachers and the improvement of the quality of education.

As a brand project jointly established by Center for Faculty Development and Office of Academic Affairs Office of SISU, the teaching experience sharing salon has been held for two consecutive years. The themes cover topics such as improving the quality of undergraduate education, improving teachers' ability and innovation of teaching mode. The sharing meeting, which receives enthusiastic responses, serves as a good interactive communication platform for teachers to share teaching experience.
