T

he Confucius Institute of University of Szeged (SZTE) held a ceremony to celebrate its fifth anniversary on October 18, 2017.

Professor Szabo Gabor, the president of SZTE, first appreciated the support from Chinese government and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) for establishing the Confucius Institute at the ceremony.

“The Confucius Institute, as a great tool of communication between Hungary and China, has become a local unique”, Prof. Gabor said.

Wang Jing, SISU University Council Deputy Chair , said SISU launched Hungarian major in 2016 to enable richer communication between two countries. She also appreciated the support from the Chinese Language Council International, the Chinese Consulate, the University of Szeged and the other partners.

Ujhely Istvan, the founder and chair of Confucius Institute and a member of European Parliament, reviewed the friendship between two countries when he worked as the Vice president of the Hungarian National Assembly.

Ujhely Istvan even awarded those who made great contributions to the Confucius Institute, including Cady Melinda, an educator; Kushoj Sandor, the former Hungarian ambassador and Herwarth, the former Consulate General of Hungary in Shanghai.

The final part of the ceremony was the art performance, which included a Hungarian dance from a Szeged’s local dancing troupe and a Chinese martial arts show.

The attendness of the ceremony included Dr. Katalin Nagy, Vice-Rector for Foreign Affairs of SZTE; Dr. Krisztina Karsai, Vice-Rector for Education of SZTE and a member of the committee of Confucius Institute; Richard, the Hungarian Dean of Confucius Institute; and Wang Lei, the Chinese Dean of Confucius Institute.

As part of the ceremony, a series of activities including Chinese calligraphy exhibition, lectures and experience day on Chinese culture were held to promote the influence of the institute and ignite people’s passion for Chinese.

Since it was founded, Confucius Institute has achieved various goals with a joint effort of both SISU and SZTE. It has established 21 teaching points, many of which teaching Chinese as the second language. Besides, more and more Hungarians have passed the HSK examination, a test of Chinese as a foreign language, coming to China for study. The Institute has also held hundreds of cultural activities, with altogether millions of people taking part in.
