o celebrate the 2017 Alumni Day of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) on December 2, student teams designed a rich variety of campus souvenirs for the returners and presented them on the Creativity Fair. The event received a warm welcome.

Souvenirs sold by different student teams are deemed as media for alumni and alumnae to recall their lives in SISU. They can show others which School they graduated via these delicate and useful souvenirs.

The souvenirs include canvas bags, baseball caps, T-shirts, hoodies, stationery such as notebooks and so on. Most of them feature printed SISU logos.

“They were sold almost at cost prices,” said Xi Yumeng, minister of SISU's Student Union’s Publicity Department and major designer of the stand from School of International Relations and Public Affairs. “Campus souvenirs are not profit-oriented but gifts to returners.”

Zhou Xiaowen, a member of SISU News-stand, said that most SISUers had ambiguous feelings to describe their loves for SISU, and those who expressed their passion might be ridiculed. But she added that almost everyone stopped to buy something for SISU.

“As a former SISU student, I think I should own a unique university hoodie to remember my identity,” said an alumnus. Another alumnus bought quite a few clothes, with his son and daughter, said Zhang Xu, another member of SISU News-stand.

Having sold over 40 hoodies, T-shirts and other accessories, SISU News-stand’s turnover reached 8,000 yuan, an amount that amazed the manager Ran Lu.

“It shows our creativity,” she added. “Many products are designed by students, and marketing strategies that the selling teams adopted are also manifestation of creativity.”

For example, to attract more returners, members of SISU News-stand adopted the idea of free card sticker. Sellers gave customers a free card sticker as a present and then customers would seek for ones that include his own school building.

In addition to alumni and alumnae, some consumers are students and teachers, domestic and overseas, from both Songjiang and Hongkou campus, according to Xi and Zhang.

“The popularity of souvenirs is due to a sense of belonging, and also, most souvenirs are functional in daily life,” Xi said.

SISU Alumni Association cooperated with the student teams to hold this event. All Schools, Office of Academic Affairs, Office of Accounting and Finance, University Library and many other offices concerned were also involved.
