S

hanghai International Studies University (SISU) and IFLYTEK CO.,LTD.(iFLYTEK), China's leading IT company specializing in natural language processing, agreed to establish a lab of smart interpretation and translation on October 21, 2017 for future machine translation, human-machine coupling and computer-assisted translation.

SISU University Council Chair Jiang Feng said he believes that SISU students will not be challenged by artificial intelligence (AI) in the near future as they are regarded as advanced communication talents. He encouraged SISU students to embrace new technologies which have revolutionized the human’s life.

Zhang Ailing, Dean of SISU’s School of Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT) emphasized that SISU students should try to acquire the true art of interpretation and translation since AI interpretation and translation still lacks flexibility.

iFLYTEK chairman Liu Qingfeng confessed that machine translation still had a long way to go before qualifying for simultaneous interpretation and high-level translation. He said he viewed this cooperation as a chance to innovate in the field of human-machine coupling.

Liu gave a featured lecture on “The Latest Progress and Typical Application of Artificial Intelligence Technology” after the signing ceremony.

According to Liu, the voice synthesis and recognition technology developed rapidly in the last 20 years. He pointed out that the fluency of the synthetic voice is now close to the announcer level and the accuracy of identification technology rises to more than 95 per cent. He added that the voice synthesis of designated characters and cross-language seamless identification technology has come true by using its AI’s depth learning ability.

He said iFLYTEK cooperates with many fields including education, medical image analysis, cancer screening and prevention of telecommunications fraud  IFLYTEK, the largest voice-listed company in the Asia-Pacific, shares more than 70 percent of the Chinese speech technology market and works with at least 10,000 developers. It dedicates to the research of intelligent speech and language technologies, development of software and chip products, provision of speech information services, and integration of E-government systems.

iFLYTEK also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Foreign Language Audiovisual Publishing House, in the purpose of complementing and strengthening the advantages of technological and resource integration,. It also supports Shanghai Foreign Language Audiovisual Publishing House to promote digital and intelligent educational resources production, and set up a new innovation system of artificial intelligence technology.

SISU's GIIT, one of the top partners of the United Nations and the European Union on language services, has been awarded the highest ranking by AIIC, the International Association of Conference Interpreters, as the only Asian university among the 15 top professional conference interpreting schools in the world.
