creaming and laughter were heard after hundreds of students flocked to a Halloween gala on November 7, sparking a festive ambience at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).
Almost 200 enjoyed the party, among whom dozens are international students. Lines of participants with make-ups queued outside the classrooms, waiting to joining in activities including fortune telling, room escaping and haunted adventure. Around them, pumpkin lanterns hung on the corridor gave off dim beams in the dark, adding to the mysterious atmosphere along with exciting whispering.
“I wonder if divination is popular abroad, yet it is a good try to make a unique celebration integrated with our own cultures,” said Wang Yang, a freshman majoring in English Education, appreciated the game “fancy.”
Gamers of haunted adventure, Ghost in Women’s Toilet, lined up to nearly 30 meters. “The eerie background music, weird-clad ‘ghosts’ hiding in toilet cubicles and artificial fingers or blood sprinkle fear throughout the room. I cannot help screaming,” said Yang Ziling, who was stilling recovering from her hoarse voice.

“I have paid close attention to the activity planning to get the latest news of Halloween carnival,” said Ren Meilun, a student from School of Education, “ I am happy to see we still hold the tradition, though it was comparatively less-scaled than before. ”
Han explained that this year they were restricted by some “political concerns,” but he still felt relieved to see both domestic and overseas students support this form of cultural exchange.
“Since our university highlights different cultures together, we will work harder to attract more foreigners in the future,” Han said. “We consider devising bilingual WeChat posts and design some special attractions for them next year.”
SISU students have been long embracers in terms of festivals of different cultures. A week before the Halloween gala, a group of flash mobs staged a flash dance in the campus to render Halloween surprise.
