L

iu Xiaochen, a student from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), was invited as the only Chinese student to discuss young generations’ perspectives on global women empowerment in an online dialogue, which was held by Global Women Leaders Voices (GWL Voices ) on June 29, 2021.

In the dialogue, Liu shared Chinese examples of “women empowerment” with other three foreign female students and Susana Malcorra, who is the member and cofounder of GWL Voices, Dean of IE School of Global and Public Affairs at IE University as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship (2015-2017) in Argentina.

In her views, there were many Chinese female doctors dedicating their life and making strategic plans based on professional knowledge during the epidemic last year. The people who long prejudiced against women therefore should not ignore their contributions and leading abilities.

As one representative of the youth, she gave an example of SISU sanitary napkin mutual-help box in the discussion, which is a box sponsored by SISU girls placed in toilet for someone without sanitary napkin in their periods.

When hearing the existing inequity between men and women in other nations, Liu was proud of China that has been protecting and supporting women’s empowerment in different aspects. “But there is still room to improving for some discrimination issues haven’t been settled yet,” Liu said.

Having participated in the Asian Women’s Leadership Program in 2020 was one reason why Liu was picked for the dialogue this time. This experience made her more interested in women’s leadership and learn more about the great importance of women’s empowerment.

“Compared with the last program, this dialogue involves not only the views of Asian but other nationalities. Being the only Chinese student for dialogue is challenging for me and I need to more carefully consider my statements,” Liu said.

Ma Sang, deputy director of SISU Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, listened to the online dialogue and helped connecting Liu and the activity’s organizer.

“In Liu’s speech, we see what Chinese youth are thinking now, and we are looking forward to what they will accomplish in the future,” Ma said, “The dialogue is a good chance to present Chinese women’s empowerment and China’s progress in gender equality, and help reducing misunderstanding from other countries.”

The dialogue is a part of preparation for Generation Equality Forum held on July 2,2021 by UN Women in Paris which has embarked 5-year journey to increase equality, leadership and opportunities for women and girls worldwide.
