uring the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, students and faculty members from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) launched a featured column, “Winter Olympics Commentary”, on the university's multilingual portal websites and overseas social media, compiling media reports and scholar's articles on the Winter Olympics.

The social media platforms of SISU (@SISUShanghai) posted compiled works and original articles during the Winter Olympics. The page views of SISU official accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter increased by 380%, 113% and 221% respectively, and the total visits to multilingual websites increased by 62.4K.

The published opinion articles discuss different aspects of the Winter Olympics, including the Green Olympics, the Winter Olympics and globalization, the Winter Olympics and Africa, the Winter Olympics and a Community of Shared Future for Mankind.

The articles' authors and editors are composed of postgraduates, international students and scholars from SISU majoring in area studies, international relations, and journalism and communication.

"They reported the whole process of the Winter Olympics and really applied what they have learned to the practice of global communication,” Guo Ke, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, said.

As the Winter Olympics was held during Chinese New Year, students and faculty members gave up the holiday and participated in the project actively.

Zhou Ying, a post-graduate from the School of Journalism and Communication, whose undergraduate major is Vietnamese, worked as an assistant editor for the column during this winter vacation. In addition to translating English articles into Vietnamese, she also collected the work results of the whole group every night.

Although her planned leisurely vacation was occupied by work, she believed that the experience of working for the column helps strengthen her practical skills of professional journalism and her language ability of Vietnamese.

“Since Vietnam is a tropical country, Vietnamese don't pay much attention to the Winter Olympics. I hope to do my best to let Vietnamese know more about the Beijing Winter Olympics,” said Zhou.

“This experience also provides an opportunity for scholars to rethink the teaching and research model of global communication,” said Guo.

“SISU is committed to promoting Generation Z (people born between 1996 and 2012) to participate in youth diplomacy, and cultivating talents for global communication,” Gu Yiqing, deputy director of SISU's University Communications, said.

In recent years, SISU has been exploring the global communication initiative of “multilingual + Generation Z”. SISU has established @SISUShanghai, the first multilingual social media matrix brand among universities in China.
