wo student teams from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) won the Shanghai competition of the 7th International Internet-related Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, this being the first time since SISU had joined the contest seven years ago.

A total of 512 projects from Shanghai universities were judged online in July 2021. Two rounds later, SISU’s two teams and another 63 winner teams stood out, becoming the shortlisted candidates.

“Yun Shang Fei Yi,” one of the gold-winning projects, aimed at telling the world craftsmanship and culture embodied in China's intangible heritage.

Xue Yan, the leader of this five-member team, is an undergraduate majoring in Journalism. When she engaged in this work, she was just a freshman. “Comparing with those postgraduates and doctoral students, we are inexperienced so we must stand on solid ground and do the best,” Xue said.

Xue’s team had interviewed 36 relevant inheritors and 40 organizations over two years with the help of two tutors. They also had tidied up and wrote encyclopedias, oral history and other materials of intangible heritage, which counted over 100,000 words. The project has been cooperating with 14 cultural institutions and 15 multilingual international communication platforms.

Xue regarded the prize as an expected gift gained from their efforts. “The prize encourages us to put what we have learnt into practice and promote Chinese culture worldwide, ” she said.

Another gold winner team “Yi Shu Jia Hu Yu” focused on exploring a new business model to integrate multi-languages with live stream.

The project leader Xie Rui — a SISU postgraduate majoring in law — together with his two peers, had set foot in live streaming early. In July 2017, they decided to start a small affiliated workshop in person which then became an independent studio ranked in top 10 on a popular Chinese music platform.

“This entrepreneurial experience is a key to competing with those technique-based teams,” he said.

Xie appreciated his instructors who helped specialize and visualize the project. SISU authorities also supported competitors by establishing an institute called Innovation and Practice Complex with training courses offered. Unlike other existing Schools, the Complex doesn’t have fixed teachers and classrooms.

The International Internet-related Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition tends to train talents, encourage innovation and foster integration between industry and education. Launched in 2015, the contest has been held for six sessions, participated by 15.78 million college students in 3.77 million teams from 124 countries and regions in five continents.

Starting in April 2021, the 7th competition would last until late October 2021 when 3,200 projects will participate in the finals either on-site or just in the form of online road show.
