ang Junyu, a graduate student from the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Shanghai International Studies University(SISU),establishes a learning platform called "SISU Youth Talk" in order to tell Chinese stories and spread Chinese culture on the world stage.
The platform was established by Yang with the support of his lecturers and classmates in 2021. It is a platform with a series of video courses, which show Chinese culture by shooting things in daily life, such as campus life, academic translation and community governance.
The videos on the platform have got nearly 400 thousand views online, and have gained attention from the media such as Shanghai Education TV Station and Xinmin Evening News. It has won numerous excellence awards from Shanghai Municipal People's Government for its popularity.
At first, Yang's team did not find an appropriate way of video production. At the beginning, they just directly used ready-made theories and materials online without adapting. However, they soon found that few students were willing to watch the videos carefully and this discouraged Yang a lot.
To change the situation, Yang and other team members decided to get firsthand experience and immerse in the Chinese context after several rounds of discussion.
For example, they went to Jialong Garden residential area of Yangpu District before the production of courses on community governance.
In the community, they met a young social worker assisting an elderly man in a wheelchair almost every day. She also actively participated in community work such as garbage sorting and corridor maintenance.
Another person they met in the community was a young entrepreneur, who helped with local economy by e-commerce.
"Their stories can detail and represent Chinese ordinary people’s life, which inspires our work," Yang said.
After this practical experience, Yang decided to make course videos from the perspectives of Chinese ordinary people. Subsequently, their video views quickly exceeded 10,000 and continued to rise.
However, Yang thought this was not enough. They needed to delve into rural areas, primary schools, secondary schools and other places to conduct offline courses, and later collected feedback through interviews and questionnaires.
Yang followed the advice by the children in a local primary school to rely less on scripts during the lecture. "Each opinion is valuable to us, no matter who raised it," Yang said.
"In the future, I will continue to participate in practical activities like this, " Yang said, "It is a great way to tell China's stories to the world in practice. "
