GOINGS-ON | Suggestion boxes help to gather student feedback for campus improvement

08 November 2015 | By Yu Shijie, Xi Xu and Gu Yiqing | SISU

S

tudents of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) said they don't know about that, and have never had feedbacks, after being told that there were suggestion boxes on the campus.

“You have no idea where and to whom to complain, as well as who will see the feedback and work on them,” said Sun Yuyao, freshman of SISU’s School of Education.

Ma Yongzhen, freshman major in Arabic, said he knew nothing about the suggestion boxes. “Nobody would take it seriously even if I give the feedback,” he said.

SISU canteens have five suggestion boxes placed at Canteen A1, B1, A2, B2, and the graduate student canteen.

Tang Zuping, the canteen manager, said that they get five to ten letters of thanks and complaints every week, contents of which include problems of too long time queuing, the cold food in winter, and the staff’s service attitude.

“We have appointed someone to collect the suggestions every week, and sort out them at once,” Tang said, “Songjiang Catering Services (which is managing the canteens) will try to meet the need of students and teachers according to its own working schedule combining with the feedback, by adjusting on the basis of the realistic condition.”

Besides, there are two suggestion boxes near the ATM at the entrance of the canteen building, one of which is managed by the Center for Student Rights and Welfare of the Students’ Union.

Li Zhangchen, the student director of the Center, said that they would check the Center’s suggestion box once a month, but most of time finding no letters at all.

Li said that if they received student’s suggestions, they would find solutions by doing survey, publicity, and reporting the issues to the university officails, and so on.

Yu Tianyi, a student of School of International Relations and Public Affairs said that the efficiency of presenting problems is low via the suggestion boxes compared with using the internet.

Ma advised the university managers to introduce the suggestion boxes to newcomers every academic year, and to set Wechat and internet channels.

And there is also booklet in every lobby of dormitory building. Qian Yusheng director of Dormitory Management Division, said that they would check the booklets once a week. If they find problems from the booklets, they would gather staff to discuss. “We will solve the problems if we were able to. If not, we will report to the officials at once.” Ma said.

In Qian’s opinion, this procedure of solving problems is indispensable though troublesome. “Students may think that our efficiency is not high enough. But please think about it for us. These problems are not so easy to solve.”

Qian said they will replace the booklets with boxes to improve the feedback channel.

If you have any suggestions, please send your letter into the suggestion box around the campuses or contact the Center for Student Rights and Welfare of SISU Students' Union via Renren.com or WeChat account. Yon may also write email directly to the University President via xiaozhang@shisu.edu.cn
