team jointly formed by Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) and Shanghai Songjiang Textile Art Museum has recently headed to Spain for the cultural and language communication project. It aims to promote intangible cultural heritage through a series of events.
In Spain, the team conducted field research on Songjiang cloth, hosted cultural lectures and arranged hands-on workshops to help local participants know better about Songjiang cloth craft.
For example, team members held an intangible cultural heritage handicraft workshop at the Seville Chinese School in Spain. During the class, Yang Panhong, an inheritor of Songjiang cotton weaving skills, introduced the history of Songjiang cloth. Children created horse-themed collages with their own hands.
Besides, Zhang Lijun, Lecturer of Spanish, School of European Studies, SISU, gave a lecture about how Songjiang cotton cloth spread to the Spanish‑speaking world via the Maritime Silk Road. In the lecture, Dongye, founder of the Shanghai Songjiang Textile Art Museum, interpreted the implied meanings of various Songjiang cloth patterns.
Ahe Liu, director of the Seville Chinese Cultural Center, stated that the program would not only broaden foreign audiences’ knowledge of traditional Chinese crafts but also help overseas Chinese children preserve their cultural heritage and foster cultural confidence.
