The past seven decades has witnessed the rapid development and great achievements that Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has accomplished. To mark and celebrate the 70th anniversary, we organize an International Dialogue on Area Studies, which draws together three outstanding SISU scholars and ten world-renowned scholars from the United States, Britain, Poland, Japan, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Morocco. Focusing on hot topics about the Middle East, Eurasia and the Red Sea regions, the speakers will state their opinions，share insights and exchange thoughts. This long-expected academic event is to showcase SISU’s multi-lingual strength and its vision to become a leading university for global and area studies.

It is hoped that this dialogue on the studies of the Middle East, Eurasia and the Red Sea Region will become a successful area studies model that respects cultural diversity, promotes collaborative research on topics of common interest, pushes forward academic paradigm shift and facilitates common disciplinary development. We believe it will be a stimulating academic feast.

Sun Degang (China): Deputy Director and senior research fellow of the Middle East Studies Institute, Shanghai International Studies University, executive member of the Chinese Association of Middle East Studies, visiting scholar at Harvard University and Cambridge University, Chief Editor of the quarterly Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (AJMEIS).

Timothy C. Niblock (UK): Founding Director and emeritus professor of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, Exeter University, visiting professor of the Institute of International and Area Studies, Tsinghua University.

Hassan Hakimian (UK): Professor of economics and Dean of the Middle Eastern Studies Department, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar, emeritus professor at SOAS, University of London, Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Economic Research Forum in Cairo.

Mustapha Machrafi (Morocco): Professor of economics and vice dean for scientific research, cooperation, partnership and executive training at the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Social Sciences of Mohammed V University in Rabat-Morocco, expert of the National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality Assurance of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Morocco.

Tugrul Keskin (Turkey): Professor of History and Director of the Center for Global Governance, Shanghai University, scholar of "Shanghai Project of Global Talents", Chief Editor of the journal Sociology of Islam.

Yang Cheng (China): Professor and Director of the Eurasian Studies Unit of Shanghai International Studies University, once worked at the Chinese embassy in Russia as a diplomat, former deputy director of the Research Center for Russian Studies at East China Normal University.

Alexander Cooley (US): Professor of political science at Barnard College, Columbia University, Director of Harriman Institute, a renowned researcher on Russian- Eurasian studies, focusing on international and non-governmental organizations’ impact on former Soviet republics’ development, governance and sovereignty.

Akihiro Iwashita (Japan): Professor at Hokkaido University and Kyushu University, Japan, former chair of the Association for Borderlands Studies, former director of the Institute of Slavic studies at Hokkaido University, an expert on the Sino-Russian and Sino-Central Asian border issues, a pioneering scholar on borderland studies in Japan.

Marcin Kaczmarski (Poland): Research fellow at University of Glasgow, former researcher at the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Oriental Studies, Poland, Finnish International Affairs Institute, a long-time researcher on Russia and Eurasia Studies and an insightful observer on foreign policies of China and Russia and the relations between those two countries.

Wang Xianhua (China): Professor and Dean of the Institute for the Global History of Civilizations at Shanghai International Studies University, Master of Arts in Hebrew Bible from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, PhD in Assyriology of University of Cambridge, visiting scholar at Harvard University and visiting fellow at the Neubauer Collegium of Chicago University.

Alexis Wick (Turkey): Associate professor at College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Koç University, Turkey, PhD of History from Columbia University, an outstanding scholar on the histories of Arab, Middle East, modern Turkey and the Ottoman Empire.

Mohamed Z. Alakhtaby (Egypt): Associate professor at American University in Cairo, Pharos University and Alexandria University, Egypt, an expert of environment studies, project management, resource management, budget and financial controls.

David Warburton (US): Professor of history at the Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations, Northeast Normal University, senior researcher, guest professor and visiting professor at American University in Cairo, Ghent University, and Humboldt University.
