Summary: Prof. Steinbach’s Lecture will address the following topics: 1)Are the humanities “sciences”? 2)Do natural sciences and engineering need humanities? 3)Do the humanities need natural sciences and engineering? 4) Consequences for institutions of research and higher education based on the answers to the 3 questions.

Speaker Biography: Professor Joerg Steinbach is a trained chemical scientist. Upon graduation from the Technical University of Berlin (Technischen Universität Berlin) he has been working in the chemical industry for 11 years and held several position in the field of “Plant and Process Safety”. He became a Full Professor for “Plant and Safety Technology” at the Technical University in Berlin in 1996. Between 2002 and 2010 he acted as a Vice President of the TU Berlin and between 2010 and 2014 he was President at the same institution. In 2014 Joerg Steinbach took over the office of the President at the newly founded Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus – Senftenberg.

Joerg Steinbach’s career shows a strong link with international activities: Apart from acting as a CEO of Uni-ASSIST e.V., the “University Application Service for International Students” from 2003-2009, his academic activities and higher education management tasks have always been embedded into an international partner university network. He has been awarded an honorary professorship from the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai. He also holds a doctor honoris causa from the National University of Water Management and Nature Resources Use in Rivne (Ukraine) and the City University London (United Kingdom).
