rom September to December, students at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) participated in an English dubbing studio established collaboratively by SISU and the leading organizations of the industry.

Leading organizations including Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio (SFDS), Shanghai Media Group (SMG), and Chinese podcast app Himalaya were involved in the studio, providing the studio participants with edgy dubbing techniques and platform to display their works.

The contents of the studio include the analysis of the original text, translating and adapting the lines, then the in-studio dubbing job itself, and finally, evaluating as well as polishing the draft.

Unlike the common courses, this kind of training was fresh to the students. "I’ve always had the dream of being a dubbing actress, but I have never received the corresponding dubbing knowledge before. The studio kinda fulfilled my childhood dream." Nadira from the freshman said.

The most difficult part of the dubbing process according to Cheng Ruiyang a participant in the studio is ensuring the consistency of the lines and their corresponding lip movement. It requires not only the mastery of both Chinese and English languages but also the paraphrasing ability to do so.

“I tried so hard to find the English word that can both the original Chinese text and the lip movement, and I got the sense of fulfillment when I see the lines go naturally with the lip movements in the final draft,” said Cheng Ruiyang。

The students not only learned about the dubbing process but also felt the teachers' love for this the profession during participating the studio.

According to Xiao Yuting, a graduate student of the College of English that the Teachers all have excellent professional quality and lofty ideals. And She was impressed by their ever-going pursuit of high standard and the unswerving commitment to the dubbing industry of China. “That kind of dedication and sense of responsibility made me yearn for this occupation,” said her.

With months’ effort, The English Dubbing Studio has dubbed several excellent Chinese films and TV works into English. Like Liu Feng, the head of the SFDS said at the first meeting of the studio members that he and the studio participants are working together  “endeavoring to share the very original Chinese culture with the world.”
