O

n May 25, 2019, the Translation Association of the School of English Studies (SESTA) at SISU visited G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley Exhibition Hall. Through a guided tour, the students learned about the development plans and goals, emerging industries and flagship products of the G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley.

General Introduction

The G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley is one of the most urbanized and dynamic economic belts in China. It contains nine cities: Shanghai, Jiaxing, Hangzhou, Jinhua, Suzhou, Huzhou, Xuancheng, Wuhu, and Hefei, covering an area of about 76,200 square kilometers.

General Requirements & Main Objectives

The G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley runs along the G60 Expressway, linking together major cities in Yangtze River Delta along the expressway. It aims to make the most out of all available resources, including the people, technology, capital, equipments, facilities, projects and policies, creating an optimized effect of "1+1>2".

One Valley and Nine Zones

The industrial layout of Songjiang District forms a picture of "One Valley and Nine Zones". "One Valley" refers to the G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley, and "Nine Zones" refers to the nine major industrial sections on both sides of the G60 Expressway Songjiang Section. Lingang Songjiang Science and Technology City, where the expressway starts, is built on the ideal location to link the valley and the zones with downtown Shanghai, and is sure to play a leading role in the development of the economic belt.

Development of The G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley

As one of the major manufacturing bases in Shanghai, Songjiang District proposed on May 24, 2016 to build a science and technology innovation valley featured by city-industry integration along the G60 Expressway. The proposal marks a major move of the "Created in Songjiang" Initiative and the first step to materialize the G60 plan.

On July 12, 2017, Songjiang, Jiaxing, and Hangzhou agreed on the construction of Shanghai-Jiaxing-Hangzhou G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley, which symbolizes the entering into the second phase of the building of G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley. The program achieved significant results in various aspects, including the normalization of cooperation mechanism, the promotion of a multilayered industrial layout, and the creation of a platform for science and technology innovation.

The third phase of the development covers areas, including Jinhua, Suzhou, Huzhou, Xuancheng, Wuhu, and Hefei; thus, completing a layout of "one valley, one core zone and multiple cities".

Emerging industrial clusters and flagship products

Technology and innovation are the key drivers of global development. By playing out its own advantages, the G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley has been able to optimize the distribution of industries, which resulted in a new system that has advanced manufacturing industries and strategic emerging industries at its core and gains support from modern service industries. This allows it to concentrate its energy on the development of artificial intelligence, high-end equipments, biomedicine, new energy, new materials and integrated circuits, and press on toward the formation of a world-class manufacturing industry clusters.

A. Cutting-edge Technology

The Cutting-edge Technology Exhibition Area features two technological breakthroughs achieved in Songjiang District: the non-human primate somatoplasm cloning technology and the plant stress growth technology. The former can inform the diagnosis, drug detection and intervention of brain diseases, and the latter has the potential to provide a solution for plant growth in severe environments.

B. High-end Equipments

The High-end Equipment Exhibition Area demonstrates an obstacle detection machine that is designed to be used in unmanned vehicles. It can sense and track obstacles in motion through external cameras.

C. Biomedicine

The Biomedical Exhibition Area demonstrates some of China’s most exciting achievements in medical R&D, including a color-printing medical self-service machine and the first domestically-developed oral CT that is to enable Chinese hospitals to overcome their current reliance on importation for such equipments. The area also features breakthroughs done by other domestic biomedical unicorn enterprises, including Shanghai Henlius Biotech Co. Ltd. in Shanghai, Teruisi Pharm Co. Ltd. in Zhejiang, and Cstone Pharm (HK) Holding Limited in Suzhou, especially in anti-cancer research.

D. New Materials

The New Material Exhibition Area shows the sound development of the industrial chain of the new material industrial cluster, covering the fields of advanced basic materials, key strategic materials and new cutting-edge materials. In the future, resources will be agglomerated, forming a layout of "one district, three bases and one pole", to promote Songjiang District as a leading hub of new material development in China.

E. New Energy

The New Energy Industry Area displays the achievements in research, development, design and manufacturing by enterprises in smart grids, new energy vehicles, wind power and other related fields, which together form Songjiang New Energy Industry Strategic Alliance. Shanghai Economic & Technological Development Zones and Chedun Town will be the two primary bases of future advances in the field, with focus on the development of new energy vehicles, photovoltaic technology, wind power and smart grids.

F. Integrated Circuits

Industry leaders in circuit technology, including Shanghai Advanced Silicon Technology Co. Ltd., Wafer Works Corp., Shanghai Sinyang Semiconductor Materials Co. Ltd., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and other enterprises, have established their primary facilities in Songjiang. By playing into the needs of the market for smart terminals, smart industries and smart grids, these companies will jointly promote the development of integrated circuit core materials and equipments and advanced sealing technology. In addition, leading chip manufacturers, package testing and equipment material enterprises are also gathering in the district, which aims for the construction of an integrated industrial layout.

After the Visit

G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley is an industrial-technological innovation forerunner, where ground-breaking scientific and technological achievements are made and transferred. Situated at the Yangtze River Delta, it is home to many world-class advanced manufacturers and developers. The visit is a mind-blowing experience, allowing us to see the power of technology and innovation.

The visit was led by Yang Yichen, lecturer at the School of English and instructor of the Translation Association, and Li Lei from the Office of University Communication.
