T

he second run of the series course of the "Communicative Chinese for Beginners" designed by Shanghai International Studies University will commence on March 2, 2020, at FutureLearn, an international MOOC platform! Meanwhile, in order to cope with the new prevention and control of the new coronavirus pneumonia and to provide free and high-quality online learning resources for learners and educators, this series will be extended till June 28th , with professional services provided by the teaching assistant team at any time.

This series will be led by Professor Zhang Yanli and Associate Professor Li Qianping from SISU School of Chinese Studies and Exchange. The series is mainly composed of three sub-courses, which includes the Chinese Pronunciation, Conversation, and Grammar. It is a learner-centered course, with implementation of interactive teaching between educators and learners. In addition, numerous SISU international students from different countries were invited to participate in the course recording. In the first run of the series, nearly 10,000 learners from more than 150 countries participated in the three courses, and nearly 70% of them remained active. One of the learners commented that “Now, I find learning Chinese possible and never realized that Chinese is so attractive!”.

The "Introduction to Chinese—Pronunciation" course takes 3 weeks long, and is mainly designed for beginners. It is taught in English, which focuses on Chinese pinyin, phonetic training, and simple daily expressions, so as to help learners acquire more accurate pronunciation, as well as embrace the beauty of Chinese phonology.

The "Introduction to Chinese-Conversation" course takes 6 weeks long. It mainly focuses on daily expressions, such as direction and plans, ordering things and making payments and etc., which is based on vocabulary and grammar of HSK’s first and second level, enabling learners to master basic daily expressions and to be able to communicate in Chinese.

The "Introduction to Chinese-Grammar" course takes 4 weeks long, and is mainly designed for learners who have a certain basic knowledge of Chinese. It teaches basic grammar such as “all”, “than”, and “is”, helping learners to explore and understand basic Chinese grammatical rules, as well as improve their ability to accurately use grammatical knowledge in context, and further improve the accuracy and fluency practice of Chinese expressions.
