ince it was opened to the public on January 23, 2021, Wuzhong Road Station is undoubtedly reputed as the most fascinating station for its unique appearance and technological aesthetics, attracting many tourists to visit it.

Sitting on the newly completed Shanghai Metro Line 15, Wuzhong Road Station is unconventionally designed to become an exhibition hall, demonstrating the traces and achievements of Shanghai since the reform and opening up. The station floor is conceptually constructed as the Huangpu River, which is the ‘mother river’ of Shanghai. And along the ‘river’, we could see splendid buildings, just like how visitors really stand next to the Huangpu River and get the sense of the city. The buildings reflected on curved walls are shinning lights and constantly change colors, contouring the magnificence of Shanghai.

Its another unique trait lies in the structure. Different from most metro stations with many huge and cumbersome pillars in the station hall, Wuzhong Road Station creatively finds a new way to hold the weight of the upper ground, replacing the traditional columns with vaults. In this way, the station is spacious and unblocked as there is no other occlusions but some subway turnstiles. The idea of vaults derives from the traditional Chinese architecture, but innovatively transformed into the construction of the modern metro station.

Inconspicuous but meaningful details can also be detected everywhere in this station. For example, along the long passage into the station are two LED light strips on both walls, which looks like the outlines of the metropolitan, impressing the passengers with its elegant simplicity. In addition, you might notice that LED light strips also exist on the attic of the platform and wonder what’s the use of them. Just for decoration? As a matter of fact, they can represent the map of Shanghai metro to some degree, and the moving direction of their lights are consistent with that of the subway.

With the special and interesting design, Wuzhong Road Station has become more than merely a metro station, but also an inspiring city art museum, a new tourist attraction, as well as a world full of lights, symbolizing Shanghai in its unique and fascinating way.
