A

s China's largest city, Shanghai is also the country's largest film market. In 2020, Shanghai contributed 5.7 percent of the country's box office market in 2020. The strong enthusiasm for watching movies of Shanghainese is inseparable from the long tradition of film, television and drama culture in Shanghai.

Since 1840s, due to the growing economics and the influx of foreign nationals, movie has also been introduced into Shanghai as a modern art and entertainment. From silence to sound, from black and white to color, Shanghai has marked each significant step in the development of movies. Shanghai is indeed the birthplace and cradle of Chinese movies. At the same time, many movie theatres sprang up in Shanghai. In modern China, watching movies is not only a new way of recreation, but also represents the pursuit and identification of a new cultural type and a new way of life.

Nowadays, Shanghai's film market is constantly growing and thriving. In 2019, Shanghai's film box office has reached 3.8 billion yuan, more than any other city in China. In 2020, the epidemic posed a strong impact on the movie market. But only one month after the resumption of Shanghai's film market, three out of four cinemas in the city reopened. And since the resumption of work in 2020, Shanghai's film market has all the time firmly occupied the first place in China. In the beginning of 2021, the movie market has been back to normal. In the Chinese New Year Festival period, the box office tripled comparing with the corresponding period in 2019.

Going to the movies has become indispensable in Shanghainese’s everyday life. But the movie market is also faced with the challenges from the increasingly growing market of plays, musicals and other entertainments.
