ith the beginning of the new semester, Shanghai International Studies Universities (SISU) ushered 1494 freshmen on September 7. 

The freshmen proportion of male to female is around 1:4. , which is one of the lowest sex ratio among the universities in Shanghai.

With 301 male and 1193 female freshmen students, SISU becomes more popular among girls this year. “We can’t interfere in student’s preference on universities. The disparity in the sex ratio is due to student’s own choices of their majors,” said Wang Binhua, head of the Office of Admissions in SISU.

“I disagree with the idea that more girls in a university is a disadvantage, which actually means SISU is more suitable for girls. I’ve heard that female graduates from SISU have been more attractive in social lives and work”, said Shao Yuming, a female freshman of English major. She pointed out that SISU is the dream of many of her classmates and female friends.

Though the minority groups of boys are supposed to feel being cherished, some male students expressed their complicated feelings. “Last year I felt blessed to have a girlfriend for the first time, so I joined a lot of students union and organizations. But I’m already tired with these this year”, said Zhang Yuqi, a sophomore in Arabic language department.

The majority of the freshman this year were born in 1997, which takes up more than 60 percent of the total. More students studied science in high school enrolled in SISU than the student studied the liberal arts or the comprehensive majors, with an ratio around 56:43:1. It shows that the Tibet, where the freshman occupies 30 percent of the total ethnic minority, is the minority with most freshman this year in SISU.
