U Sing I Sing: Among the sea of crowd to hear your voice

16 April 2015 | By Cao Jiayan and Zhou Jiawen | SISU

U Sing I Sing”, dubbed as a traditional student singing contest, which arranged by the art education center of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) will hold its rematch on late April this year, 30 entrants will compete for 15 seats in the final round. We interviewed several popular players as a sneak peak before the game starts; let’s guess who would be the top star of this year.

Sun Jiahui: Music is like an old friend

Dressed in washed denim jacket, Sun Jiahui, a girl who keeps short hair, appears to be very natural in front of the cameras. Quite familiar with the singing stage as she entered top 30 when she was a freshman and showed up as guest singers for her friend in the final when she was a sophomore. The desire of being a singer on the stage triggered her courage of taking to it once again.

Music seems to have become a part of her life, letting her know, the affection for a person can be so presumptuous and persistent. "Once to see a musical with a friend, we stood for six hours to enjoy the return of Jin akanishi (a Japanese singer) after years of silence, it was actually kind of impressed as I cried and cried until one of my eye contact fell out, “she said.

Sun became a fan of Jin when she was in middle school, but one year the sudden retiring and reduced exposure in public places of the idol agonized her. As time went by, the pain was healed. But one day, the idol came back; everything seems to be no big change.

" Seeing his face which was almost not changed, neither did his naughty, the habit of wearing hats and dark glasses, and his motion of biting lips, sticking out his tongue. It felt good, just like all these eight years, I haven't changed, either, "she said.

Her dedication for the idol Music was embodied in the same way as that for the music. Music may not be her ultimate destination, but it accompanied, like an old friend for many years, who is always there when she's happy or sad.

Deji muzho: A music pilgrim on the way

Noisy as the scene was, she smiled and looked around, eyes firmly and indifferent, even the low-key denim did not cover off her unique temperament.

Deji muzho, the only Tibetan singer of the top 30, she calls herself a “typical Tibetan girl”, with an open mind and the yearning for a quiet life, but it is definitely not a submissive little girl.

At the age of 11, she left home to study Tibetan classes in Anhui Province, middle of China, alone. Leading a completely closed life for four years with no cell phones, computers, or televisions. Music accompanied her when she felt lonely, becoming a warm light into those silent and helpless nights, and into the solitude and sadness of the hearts.

It was her religious beliefs of Tibetan Buddhism, as she always confirmed, that made her on the way to worship, when her heart was always calm and the freedom of detachment in her mind was beyond speech, like the music to her feelings.

I regard Music as Faith, so you probably understand the importance of it to me now, " she said with her beautiful eyes bent into a bright moon.

Li Kuiwen: A Korean “Grandpa” in band

Just like a big boy, anti - wear hats with single-fold eyelids and crooked smile, the height advantage does make him a character coming out from those romantic Korean dramas, especially when his fluent Korean singing style induces a taste of some other exotic amorous feelings.

Because the work of his parents, he has stayed more than 10 years in China, As a result, his proficiency of the Chinese language should not be underestimated and communicating with Mandarin is also without any pressure for him. In SISU, he was even involved in the formation of a band: “the Green Pepper”.

He smiled and said, “because of the age; everyone in the team called me ‘Grandpa’”. And from which his appearance is different is that he is a mature charm, a little shy, but there is no lack of humility polite.

Living in a foreign country, the existence of music is the motivation for him. Whenever he sang songs from his hometown, the wordless emotion is like a spiritual support, giving him the courage to keep on walking.

The power of music travelled cross the border to accompany the big boy to grow up and become a real man.

San Sier: Music belongs to me, Songs to her

Bouffant hair, stubble without repairs, guitar slung over his shoulder, only the music is with him wherever he goes.

If not ask his name, we just know that he is a man named “San sang”, a young men with unique musical temperament.

“Everyone’s love for a thing is inherent, a gift from the inside out, like shoots grow from the soil, as it is a process meant to be,” as he puts it, when he was exposed to the music of the universal Youth Hostel (in the 90 American rock band album of the same name) in the high school, his love of music first emerged in the heart, and became a lifelong pursuit of course.

This is perhaps the plot that all of the girls are looking forward to: Run away for love. After graduating from high school in 2012, San made a gap year to work in a bar of a city where his girlfriend was in, and that’s when his work on the stage started. He wrote songs for her, and she was the only one person who could listen to him to sing these songs.

The song belongs to her, and the music will always with San Sang. Playing music with friends, singing ballads or rock music, and exchanges those coins for drinks, he owns the unrestrained fiat, just because he sings the music of the heart.

Nu Er Xia Ti: Affectionate interpretation from a domineering rookie

There is a boy dressed in a black suit and wearing sunglasses that hide his gentle temperament. He looks so handsome, full of star style, which once attracted the audience to scream constantly.

“My Mandarin is not good, does it not matter?” When first interviewed, the slightly shy newcomer is still a little nervous.

He is a freshman from Japanese school; one Xinjiang boy really enjoying singing, loving to sing songs of various styles.

When it comes to the first stage experiences, Xia Ti thinks it was a different time. At the first time, he participated in the artistic performances organized by the school. Although it was lip - syncing, it did give him the impression that the real experience of singing was so wonderful. Since then, Xia Ti always wanted to be like a real singer on stage.

With the encouragement of the seniors, Xia Ti entered “U Sing I Sing”, and would like to take a challenge of the school's stage; he hopes it can show his singing voice in front of more people.

Xiao Shan: The warm music from a warm boy

He seems to have the ability to virtually create a soft, ethereal music scene, so beautiful, so soothing.

While Xiao Shan was an undergraduate student in Beijing Foreign Studies University held a contest called Music without Borders, whose rule was to let foreigners singing Chinese songs, and let the Chinese singing foreign songs. He chose Russian repertoire and for lack of ability, he did not enter the second round, but then he was firmly on the practicing singing.

“Eason Chan and Lin Jiasong, always give a person a warm heart; the voice of A-mei and Stefanie, always let a person automatically follow the tempo”, under the influence of these famous Chinese singers, he keeps growing up on the road of music.
