very year, a great deal of events are held in Shanghai, which means quite a lot of volunteers is needed. As for Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), a research shows that, students are very active and willing to be volunteers in most circumstances.
The Youth Volunteer Association (YVA), the largest and the most official volunteers’ association in SISU, had 364 long-time volunteers last year.
Li Yujia, who is in charge of the YVA, said, “We recruit about 360 students every year as our common volunteers to support our events. But that is far from enough, when we come across some big events like world championships of figure skating, we have to recruit more students as part-time volunteers.”
They also provide volunteers for the anniversary of the founding of SISU and other campus events. About 600 students were recruited as part-time volunteers.
Although quite a lot of students are willing to be volunteers, they still lack of volunteers sometimes. During the ATP Masters, due to the lack of volunteers to pick up, they suffered a hard time. Though they extended the recruiting time, it still took them a long time to solve this problem.
SISU has sent 57 volunteers to the Shanghai Rolex Masters ATP Tournament, which is known as the most high-class tennis competition worldwide during September 10th to 18th.
Fourteen volunteers were responsible for airport pickup, eighteen for souvenir selling, seven for media placement and another eighteen volunteers for ticket services.
You Yue, whose job was to pick up athletes in the Pudong International Airport said that the plane might arrive at any time from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m, so they have to keep waiting and to stay in the airport for 6 days.
“Our welfare is the small talk with distinguished player like Murray and WaWrinka and we also saw Federer very closely,” he said.
More than 200 applied for the ATP voluntary. Li Peiqian, the principal for ATP voluntary said that it has almost became the tradition of SISU to seed volunteers to ATP, which is really a good chance for SISU students to practice.
Ten routine voluntary chances are provided by SISU Volunteer Center, such as working in Shanghai Library, Shanghai Zoo, East Art Center etc.
Apart from that, CICA Summit, Figure Skating World Championship, F1 China Grand Prix and other organizations also contribute to the superior voluntary chances for SISUers.
For the college volunteer and service department, they seem to have no problem with the number of volunteers.
Some common events just need about 4-5 volunteers. Although some big events need up to 200, they still can recruit enough volunteers. “Our propagandas have to be very attracting so we can attract more students to participate,” said Zhu Qinghuan, former student director of the volunteer and service department of the Students’ Union at SISU’s School of Journalism and Communication.
Zhu also shows his concern that although they haven’t come across shortage of volunteers, there’s an obvious problem that when the event is less interesting, people to sign up for the event shows a dramatic drop.
Both Zhu and Li admitted that students have a great passion for the volunteer service. No matter they participated for the additional moral education points, bonus money or just a sense of achievement or dedication, they did a quite good job in the events.
With so many students signing up to take part in the volunteer services, the volunteer and service departments has to filtrate. “We usually choose those who sign up first. But it is quite hard to make decisions because so many students desire to be volunteers. As for those have special requirements, we organized interviews,” said Zhu. Conflicts are that those who failed to be volunteers complained that the required numbers of volunteers are too small.
Joey, a student signed up to be a volunteer but failed to join in the activity for three times, said, “I hope there are more opportunities for us. It is real sad to fail to be a volunteer three times.” Another student Doris claimed that sometimes true circumstances were different from those in propaganda. Yang Fengling questioned that if the volunteers can get so many benefits such as bonus money, should they still be considered as volunteers?
“Welfare is set to encourage more people to sign up,” Zhu said. “As to students’ complaints, I hope that we can show more understanding to each other. We will do our best to let everyone who signs up to have an opportunity to be a volunteer. And I hope that we can work together to make the volunteer and service department better.”
