hanghai International Studies University(SISU) hosted the sixth international symposium to discuss how to build up a framework of Area Studies.

The conference held 23 sub-forums, covering topics including regional and national academic personnel training, education, science and technology, diplomacy, energy transformation, nationalism.

Researcher Jiang Feng is speaking at the conference

Jiang Feng, Co-Chairman of Council of Shanghai Academy of Global Government and Area Studies(SAGGAS) and Chair of the University Council of SISU, proposed three suggestions for the framework of Area Studies.

His first suggestion is to break the professional barrier and explore the new path of interdisciplinary. The second one is to attach importance to the construction of regional and country subject theory and broaden the research horizon. The third is to promote technological innovation and the change of knowledge framework.

He said, "The foundation of China's independent knowledge system of area studies is Chinese history and cultural traditions."

Professor Wang Fan is speaking at the symposium

"China's diplomacy is moving to integration, promoting exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations," Professor Wang Fan  emphasized.

In addition, Professor Kent Calder, Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies(SAIS), said, "Area Studies should have a solid language foundation, long-term research experience, and maintain long-term exchanges and communication with relevant scholars."

SAGGAS is a collaborative research platform organized and operated by SISU and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The SAGGAS gathers domestic and international high-quality academic resources.
