A

n interview video showing fluent oral Greek by teachers and students from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was appreciated by Greek netizens on the social media, considering that Greek is said to be one of the world’s most difficult languages to learn.

Several SISU students majoring in Greek introduced themselves and their hometown, and their reasons for learning Greek when interviewed by a journalist from the Greek Department of the Central Radio and Television Station.

"I have been interested in Greek mythology since I was a child. I admire those great philosophers of ancient Greece and I want to understand their philosophical thoughts in depth," said Dai yifan, a forth-year student majoring in Greek. "

When asked if it was difficult to learn Greek, they replied in fluent Greek, "It's very difficult. I can hardly remember the words." "I found it hard to handle the pronunciation at first, and later I found that grammar was also difficult." "There is a big difference between Greek and Chinese."

The video received 1.1 million views, more than 110,000 likes, nearly 2,000 comments, and more than 4,000 reposts in just a few days, and was then reported or reposted by more than 30 Greek online media. The video was named opentv's best news of the day on November 15.

After watching the video, some Greek netizens said that these students speak "even better than Greeks" and even joked, " Are they really not Greeks?"

The popularity of the video gave students a big surprise. "One day in class, our foreign teacher mentioned that our interview had been popular on the Internet. During the break, we searched"κινέζοι φοιτητές "(Chinese students), and our video firstly popped up. There were many interesting comments below," said Yu Yajing, a forth-year student of Greek major.  "The Greek we spoke during the interview was relatively simple. I didn't expect such a big response."

Regarding the praise of Greek netizens, Yu said that she would take it rationally. " I’m glad that my efforts in learning Greek can be seen. However, I won’t drown in the praise of the netizens. I will improve my Greek constantly."

"Greek is difficult to the beginners because it has a very different language system from English.  Our teachers teach Greek in a very systematic way and they give us lots of opportunities to practice speaking," said Yu.

The school also held various cultural festivals, such as multilingual dubbing competition and Cervantes Drama Festival to help students appreciate the charm of Greek culture while learning the language.

At the end of the video, Hu Jingjing, director of the Greek studies office, introduced the Greek major. Foreign teacher Kong Tianrui introduced her teaching experience in SISU. She said that the learning atmosphere here is very good.

SISU established the first Greek major in China, with extensive international cooperation, focusing on cultivating Greek language talents with global vision.

In recent years, students majoring in Greek have appeared frequently on many Greek media platforms such as Greek TV, Cyprus TV, Greek Internet Media to tell Chinese stories and spread Chinese voices with the professional knowledge they have learned.
