  • SISU Youth Curriculum Program wins first Shanghai Museum Excellent Education Project

T

he Youth Curriculum Program offered by the Museum of World Languages, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was selected for the first Shanghai Museum Excellent Education Project recently.

The project aims to collect some educational programs that embody cultural characteristics, cater to diverse audience needs and align with the modern era.

With the combination of museum resources and the Internet, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism organized the project to create new ways of learning and practice for primary and middle school students.

Nearly 40 lessons held by the museum are open to youths from 30 primary and middle schools across 12 provinces nationwide. The three key themes of these lessons are: “Foreign Celebrities and Landscapes”, “Geography and History of Different Regions in China” and “Multilingual Exploration of Multiculturalism”.

In designing these courses, the museum’s faculty and SISU’s students combined language exhibits, textual and digital resources from the museum with teaching practices, bridging the gap between basic and higher education.

More than 10,000 students have watched 16 online youth lessons in the “Foreign Celebrities and Landscapes” series till the end of 2022. Those lessons focused on famous people and ancient countries, including Russian musician Tchaikovsky, Indian poet Tagore and the history of ancient Egypt and Rome.

The lecturer team has also introduced the online series lessons “Geography and History of Different Regions in China”, encouraging students in rural areas to read Chinese classics and learn local culture from them.

The course explores geographical features and histories of various regions in China, such as Henan (the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization), Xinjiang (the domestic province with the largest land area) and Shanghai (an international city with many historical sites).

“This lesson enabled rural students to break the limitation of space and learn about the world outside their local region,” said Zhong Lin, a student of SISU giving the lesson about Chongqing’s culture.

“When I recited a poem about Chongqing with those students online at the end of the lesson, I could feel their interest in Chinese classical works,” she added.

Both series of courses above have contributed to the development of rural education and are available through the official account of “the World Languages Museum of SISU” on Bilibili, a popular Chinese video platform.

The Museum of World Languages at SISU is the first world language museum in China and one of the few language museums in the world, as well as a member of the Chinese Museum Association and the National University Museum Education Alliance.
