bout 60 Arabic language teachers from different universities participated in the training event, which was held from April 15 to 19 at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).
During the event, Umamah Shangiti, the teaching director of the King of Saudi Arabia Global Institute, and other experts from the institute, provided academic guidance and practical experience sharing on language teaching combined with interactive games for native and non-native speakers.
The feature of Saudi teacher’s vocabulary teaching method is associative divergence, which requires learners’ ability to associate new information with what they have learned before. In language learning, they should master the use of synonyms, antonyms, conjunctions, derivatives, and other forms, forming a memory palace style learning method.
In addition, Saudi Arabia's textbooks for non-native Arabic language learners use the CEFR (Common Reference Framework for European Languages) standard for their different learning levels, with a large number of color images to assist in understanding.
Umamah Shangiti pointed out four key elements of listening learning: the learner's overall level, audio and language, learning purpose, and coherence.
She encourages flexible use of listening training modes. For example, using purposeful and targeted listening can help students train their mastery and accuracy of details. And by using a large amount of audio resources, including radio programs, music, conversations, students can improve their adaptability to different language environments.
In addition to listening practice techniques, Umamah Shangiti also pointed out some tips for reading comprehension such as marking the incomprehensible content in reading, identifying the narrative structure of the story, and using illustrations to help understand the content of the article.
The training event for Arabic teachers is co-organized by SISU, the Arabic Language Sub Committee of the Ministry of Education and the King Salman Arabic Global Academy of Saudi Arabia.
