hanghai International Studies University (SISU) held the first metaverse academic forum among Chinese college libraries on Dec. 3, 2022, which aimed to explore the new field of metaverse and intelligence library.

The participants of the forum joined via live stream or meta-universe virtual venue that had set up 100 seats. About 16,000 people watched the forum online at the same time.

The event site contained not only meeting rooms, training rooms, and VIP rooms for various session presentations, but also activity areas where participants could interact and watch videos, group photo areas, experience rooms, and exhibition halls.

In the virtual scene, participants, both celebrities and newcomers in the industry, gathered for an immersive experience only in the image of their own defined digital human.

Jin Xiaoming, Shanghai Library Association secretary-general, said that the forum was an exploration by librarians to integrate metauniverse technology and apply the metauniverse scene where reality and virtuality coexist.

As one of the first fields to keep tabs on metaverse and follow its latest frontier, the university library community has been conducting theoretical research and practical exploration.

At the opening ceremony, Li Yansong, President of SISU, suggested that smart library is critical for the high-quality development of universities in the new era. He explained that learning is flexible and personalized in the smart library supported by metaverse.

Li also pointed out that SISU is committed to building a humanistic, humane, personalized and comfortable university-smart library.

In addition, Li said he expected experts and scholars to discuss the opportunities and challenges that the metaverse brings to the smart libraries of the future from different perspectives.

In the first report of Wu Jianzhong, Library Director of University of Macau (UM) and Director of the Academic Research Committee of Library Society of China, Wu explained why people need metaverse, what benefits metaverse technology would bring to libraries and the new challenges ahead.

Then Chen Yinchi, Library Director of Fudan University (FDU), said that the library field should recognize pros and cons of metaverse and consider how to apply new technologies while better guiding technology for humanistic care and reconstructing the integration of libraries and the metaverse.

Chen pointed out that smart library construction had given a new historical mission and task for librarians and the whole industry.

Zhou Deming, Director of the Shanghai Library Association, told that it’s high time that librarians should promote smart libraries from the seminar level to the practical operation stage and create libraries in the metaverse.
