fficials of the Iranian Expediency Discernment Council visited Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) recently to cooperate with SISU to promote Iranian higher education institutions and think tanks, and discuss national policy proposed by China.

As part of the visit to China, SISU was the only university the officials visited in Shanghai. During the meeting, they talked about ways to enhance mutual understanding between Iran and China based on the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’. Besides, Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi has visited China in February this year, which further strengthened the cooperation between the two countries.

SISU has been devoting itself in cultivating outstanding scholars engaged in international relations and regional studies. For example, scholars of Iranian Studies Center of SISU would write nearly 50 reports and 100 commentaries together for the global media annually, improving the development of Islamology in China.

Since 1997, SISU began to taught Persian, the official language of Iran, and it has become a nationwide leading language program. It also cooperated with several universities in Iran, including Imam Khomeini International University, one of Iran’s most famous public universities.

Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, the General Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council, said that he would facilitate more exchanges and cooperations between SISU and Iranian universities. He also said that he welcomed more Chinese students to study Persian.

SISU professors also discussed China’s modernization and Middle East policy at the meeting. They are mainly from Middle East Studies Institute, China-Arab Research Center on Reform and Development and School of Asian and African Studies.

The Iranian officials agreed on the national policy proposed by China, which includes global development, civilization and security initiatives. They said that the implementation of these initiatives would contribute to the overall development of the world.

One of the main responsibilities of the Expediency Discernment Council is to advise the Iranian President on general and strategic planning. The officials also said that they hoped to learn from China's experience about economic, social development and modernization, and to exchange perspectives with China on governance.

“Over the ten years, we have been committed to developing mutually beneficial relationships between Iran and China. With the changing global environment, the East has become one of the world’s centers of power. Iran has been ready to work with Asian countries to deal with challenges in such an unstable situation,” said Zolghadr.
