nternational students from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) were wearing traditional Chinese clothes and played ancient Chinese games during Chinese National Costume Week in Shanghai recently.
Traditional Chinese clothes displayed at the exhibition area were from different dynasties, including Han, Tang, Ming and Qing.
“These clothes are very beautiful and I feel that I come back to ancient China when I wear it,” said Mo Li, a SISU student from Egypt. She thought that Egypt and China had differences in traditional clothes and games.
SISU students also played Tohu (throwed arrows one by one into a pot), tried archery, enjoyed tea and played Cuju. Cuju became popular during the Warring States Period, more than 2000 years ago. It is similar with football today but with simpler rules.
“The life of ancient Chinese seems so interesting and abundant,” said Shen Mingcan, a SISU student from Morocco. Before studying at SISU, she only learned about China in textbooks.
SISU students also watched traditional Chinese performances. For example, French girl Nana, a fan of Beijing opera, imitated the dancers’ poses in traditional Chinese costume, when she saw their performance on the stage. She said, “The performances here are full of strength and authenticity.”
Chinese National Costume Day is celebrated on the birthday of Huangdi, the leader of ancient Chinese tribal alliances. The celebration of Chinese National Costume Week is an extension of Chinese National Costume Day.
