uropean top academic journal Lebende Sprachen [Living Languages] appointed Hannelore Lee-Jahnke and Zhang Ailing, two professors from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), to be editor-in-chief and editorial board member respectively in February 2017, with Zhang being the first member from Asia.

Prof. Hannelore Lee-Jahnke, former Dean of School of Translation and Interpretation (ETI) and Assistant Secretary of International Affairs for University of Geneva in Switzerland, now works as co-director of SISU’s Interdisciplinary Research Center (IRC) and doctoral supervisor at SISU’s Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT).

Prof. Zhang Ailing is Dean of SISU’s Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT) and co-director of SISU’s Interdisciplinary Research Center (IRC).

Since its founding in 1956, Lebende Sprachen [Living Languages] has been the leading German journal for foreign languages in research and practice. It is collected by dozens of internationally recognized journal indexing database including EBSCO, MLA International Bibliography and ProQuest. It contains articles and reviews on language in general and covers topics on specific languages and cultures, living languages and the life of language. The spectrum of topics includes interlingual phenomena such as diverse facets of translating and interpreting in theory and practice as well as various aspects of translation studies. Furthermore, the journal focuses on intralingual issues in applied linguistics and in sociolinguistics such as the change of text type and discourse conventions. Lebende Sprachen is directed at professionals such as translators, interpreters, linguists, philologists, lexicologists, terminologists and students of these fields. It Reaches readers from around the world due to the publication languages English and German.

De Gruyter has been a leading independent scholarly publishing houses specializing in linguistics, with over 1,300 types of books and over 700 types of journals published per year.

The appointment is a breakthrough of translation studies except for the launch of IRC in October 2016 and success of holding an international seminar about interdisciplinary studies in translation and interpretation. This will rise the international influence of SISU in studies of translation and interpretation.

Language Policy, founded by Bernard Spolsky in 2002 and published by Germany Springer Publishing House, is one of major academic journals in the fields of language policy and language education policy.

SISU scholars of language policies, supported by the Research Center for Foreign Language Strategy, has closed relations with international scholars in recent years.

SISU has seven academic journals collected by Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) between 2017 and 2018, taking the first place among Chinese higher educational institutions of language studies, according to the Institute for Chinese Social Sciences Research and Assessment.

The seven selected journals are Journal of Foreign Languages, Foreign Language World, Computer-assisted Foreign Language Education, Comparative Literature in China, International Review, English and American Literary Studies and Arab World Studies, covering different research fields such as linguistics, Chinese literature, politics, and foreign literature.

Apart from the journals mentioned above, Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in Asia published in English, East Journal of Translation, Foreign Language Testing and TeachingLanguage Policy and Language Education and Journal de l'enseignement du français en chine are included in the total 12 academic journals and collected papers edited and published by SISU.
