hanghai International Studies University (SISU) volunteers assisted the Shanghai Organizing Committee in communicating with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and providing translation services during the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) Shanghai.
SISU volunteers served in multiple frontline foreign-related positions, including translation, VIP reception, and athlete support, covering nine foreign languages.
Volunteers of the media operation section needed to connect with the media, respond to consultation emails from all over the world, prepare various promotional events, as well as write and translate letters.
Dong Jiaqi, a SISU forth year student majoring in Broadcasting, was responsible for communicating with the IOC's Media Operations Department as a member of the media operation translation volunteer team. "Working in the media center has deeply impressed me that every small effort, every pursuit of details, is to help the world better understand China and Shanghai."
As a translation volunteer, Liu Xiaoyu, a 2022 Master's student majoring in English Language and Literature, was responsible for translating and proofreading various materials in the audience service section. When providing translation, accuracy is what she believes to be the most important criterion. Liu constantly adjusted the translation details to ensure accurate information was provided to the audience.
"If there is any small omission on the event manual, the audience may miss the competition time or the correct viewing location."
Zhang Lihui, a forth year student majoring in English Education, is responsible for document translation, conference interpretation, on-site accompanying translation, and email communication with the IOC. With the accumulation of work experience, she became more familiar with her work. "At the beginning, I needed to take shorthand to interpret meetings, but now I can almost translate directly without using notes."
From May 16-19, the OQS Shanghai was held at the Shanghai World Expo Park near the Huangpu Riverside. The world's top athletes from four events: breaking, BMX freestyle, skateboarding, and sport climbing competed fiercely for the tickets to the Paris Olympics.
