T

he conference of the “Annual Report of the Trend of Europe-US Relations 2023” was held at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) on December 1, focusing on US-Europe relations over the past year and their implications for the “strategic triangle” between the US, Europe, and China.

The conference has three discussion topics: the competition and cooperation between the US and Europe in the fields of technology, economy, energy, and climate governance; the interaction between the US and Europe in the fields of geopolitics and major country relations and the relationship between subregions of Europe and the US.

The “Annual Report of the Trend of Europe-US Relations 2023” was released at the conference.

Jiang Feng, SISU University Council Chair, stressed that International and Area Studies have become an emerging issue in the humanities and social sciences, with research on Europe and US-Europe relations being an integral part of it.

Ding Chun, President of the Shanghai Institute for European Studies (SIES), explained that the relationship between the US and Europe remained overall stable over the past year, but there are still contradictions in fields such as economy, diplomacy.

Xin Hua, Director of the European Union Research Center at SISU, said that the US and Europe are expanding cooperation in critical infrastructure, critical raw materials, and disruptive new technologies, though they have been competing in areas such as export controls, investment review, and trade protection.

Professor Yang Fengmin, Supervisor at the SIES, emphasized that in China-EU ties, China should make every effort to promote economic and trade cooperation, and improve risk management mechanisms in bilateral relations.

Other experts also shared their views on German-American relations, Anglo-American relations, and US relations with Central and Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Northern Europe, and the Benelux region.

“Annual Report of the Trend of Europe-US Relations” is an annual report launched by SIES in cooperation with the Centre for European Union Studies of SISU starting in 2022.
