ver 70 scholars worldwide attended a forum to discuss online media and global communication, which was held both online and offline by Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) from April 8 to 9, 2023.

The forum was to review the achievements of academic journal called Online Media and Global Communication (OMGC), which was founded by SISU’s School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) in 2022. The 40th anniversary of SJC was also celebrated.

Ha Xiaoying, Distinguished Research Professor at Bowling Green State University and founding editor of OMGCreviewed the data and situation of the first year of OMGC.

The editorial committee summarized the experience of running the journal in the past year and gave suggestions on the future development and publicity of OMGC.

Ivanka Pjesivac, a professor at the University of Georgia in the United States, said the journal editorial board was very valuable, for OMGC had brought together scholars from all over the world.

Scholars said that it was a great challenge for Chinese research to break “hegemony”. From their viewpoint, most concepts and theories in communication studies originated from the West, and research papers on the Chinese context were not taken seriously abroad.

Zhan Ning, an associate researcher at Shandong University, said it was hard to describe the real China to foreigners.

Wu Fang, an associate professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said that Chinese scholars should pay attention to different cultural situations and way of thinking when writing articles to English journals.

Guo Ke, dean and professor of School of Journalism and Communication of SISU, appreciated the sharing of scholars for the forum. He hoped to expand the cooperation with Ha and expand the translation team, which was consisted of teachers and students who came from different majors in SISU.

OMGC is an English academic journal sponsored by SISU and published by De Guyter Press. It provides multilingual summaries in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, German, Japanese in addition to English.
