Two Scholars and some students from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) talked about the importance and the way of making the world hear China’s voice in a TV program on Oct. 17, 2022.

Prof. Guo Ke, dean of SISU’s School of Journalism and Communication, explained three emerging trends in current international communication in the TV program. According to him, the trends were varied patterns of international communication, blurred publicity between China and other countries, as well as a combination of language learning and other knowledge.

Prof. Guo also emphasized the role of universities in response of these trends, saying that SISU scholars and students have written academic critics in dozens of foreign languages to help introduce China globally.

Taking the multilingual reportage of the Winter Olympic Games by SISU faculty and students earlier this year as an example, Prof. Guo also stressed that universities should pay attention to the practice of international communication.

Prof. Yang Bo from SISU’s School of Russian and Eurasian Studies and Prof. Zhang Weiwei from Institute of China Studies of Fudan University were the other two scholars invited to the TV program.

All of the three scholars agreed on the importance of receivers in international communication during a discussion on Guo’s words. Prof. Yang said that foreign audiences have appeared to be increasingly interested in China in the past ten years.

Prof. Guo encouraged universities, especially foreign language universities, to do the fundamental research through collecting cases from databases of different countries and regions.

Prof. Zhang emphasized discourse building to make people using different languages easily understand each other in international communication.

SISU student Li Zixuan said, “ I am proud of SISU’s achievements of SISU in the field of international communication and meanwhile I have a mission to tell Chinese stories well to the global audiences in my future study and practice.”
