undreds of participants, both from outside and within the campus, were attracted to the 2024 "SISU Multi-language EXPO" and "Night at the Museum" which was held by Shanghai International Studies University(SISU) on May 16 to celebrate its 75th anniversay.
The celebration was divided into two main parts: One is visiting the SISU History Museum and the Museum of World Languages; the other is attending a multicultural fair featuring interactive activities from the university's nine language departments. These activities showcased the linguistic and cultural diversity of various countries.
During the activity of SISU Multi-language EXPO, one highlight was an array of cultural displays. Students from the School of Russian and Eurasian Studies performed traditional songs in cultural attire, while the German Faculty offered German pretzels, sausages, and a soccer shootout game. The Korean Booth invited participants to try on traditional hats and enjoy Korean dance, as well as make traditional wind chimes.
The other highlight was the interactive cultural exchange. For example, the Turkish section presented classic songs, tourism brochures, scenic postcards, traditional chess and card games, and miniature Turkish houses. In the Greek section, teacher Rania taught basic phrases for greetings, thanks, and farewells, providing a taste of Aegean linguistics. SISU’s School of English Studies took quizs on classic English novels, films, and songs, which sparked participants' interest in Anglo-American culture.
"I learned about Greek mythology and history, picked up a few Cambodian phrases, and recognized some Nigerian words. Despite the differences, there are fascinating similarities in how ideas and emotions are expressed in languages," said Mao Ruijie, a student from Shanghai Xinzhong Senior High School. He attended the event with his school group.
During the activity of Night at the Museum, the Museum of SISU History and the Museum of World Language adopted interactive formats, inviting museum enthusiasts to search for exhibits that trace the university's historical roots and complete tasks for a chance to win themed souvenirs. Attendees who completed four tasks could win exclusive museum-themed souvenirs. The event also featured classic books in various languages, gifted to enthusiastic participants who demonstrated a love for language learning.
Founded in 2018, the SISU Multi-language EXPO is known for its immersive experiences and broad participation. This year, it celebrated world languages and cultures while adding to the festive atmosphere of SISU's 75th anniversary.
