  • Going Global

Welcome to Shanghai International Studies University.

E

stablished in December 1949, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) is China's top institution of higher education in global and area studies, with an established reputation for foreign language education. As an internationally recognized, prestigious university, SISU is distinctive for its multidisciplinary and multicultural nature, committed to preparing innovative professionals and future global leaders for a wide range of international expertise to address the critical challenges of the "multilingual+" era.

SISU is one of the first Chinese universities to enter into cooperation agreements with the UN Headquarters and offices, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. It stands highly among Chinese universities in the QS World University Rankings and other international rankings, and has an A+ rating (in the foreign languages and literature category) in the academic evaluation by the Ministry of Education, tied for first place in China.

SISU is a leader in linguistics and language education. SISU actively aligns with national and local development plans and strategies based on our unique combination of strengths as a multilingual, interdisciplinary, and intercultural institution, while we continue to consolidate and develop our traditional distinction in foreign languages and literatures. Currently, we're teaching 49 languages, embracing almost all of the major modern languages spoken in the world, and we also offer multiple courses in classical languages. SISU has built China's first museum of world languages, which aims to safeguard and develop intangible cultural heritage and promote exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations. SISU has built technology centers for eye-tracking, EEG, and corpus studies, and set up an interdisciplinary lab for interpretation and translation to promote research that combines linguistics with computer science and cognitive neuroscience.

SISU is distinguished in global and area studies. Based on more than 100 research centers, academic bodies and think tanks, SISU is making well-perceived contributions to social development through the application of our research results in area studies and global communication. Among them, the China-Arab Center for Reform and Development Studies has become an important window for China and Arab countries to exchange experience in reform, development, and governance. Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies has grown into a comprehensive collaborative research platform to support China's BRI initiative. SISU's Middle East Studies Institute, the Research Center for Global Public Opinion of China, the Research Center for Foreign Language Strategies, and the Institute for Silk Road Strategy Studies are "CTTI Source Think Tank" units. SISU publishes 18 academic journals, seven of which are CSSCI source journals or collections and four are published in English overseas.

SISU enjoys a global network of education. SISU has established partnerships with more than 440 universities, cultural and educational institutions and international organizations from 62 countries and regions around the world. We're a member of many international academic alliances and networks such as the Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAC) and China-UK Association for Humanities in Higher Education. About 45 percent of our undergraduate students have overseas study experience. Each year, SISU recruits about 4,000 international students from all over the world, ranking very high in this regard in the country. SISU implements an "external scholar plan" to build an international faculty and promote international research cooperation. About 90 percent of our faculty has overseas experience, and at the same time, we have over 340 foreign faculty members on board.

SISU has embarked on the new journey of building a world-class international studies university. For the new era, we have five objectives: an incubation institution for "multilingual +" talent; a new cradle of foreign language and literature studies; a key source of global knowledge; a strategic hub for the development of competences for communication in the global discourse system; and an exemplary institute for the reform and development of foreign language education.

Looking forward, in order to realize our educational mission, we need to bring on board outstanding scholars from home and abroad. Together, we will advance our cause in the new era.
