Scholars gather at SISU discussing postgraduate education in translation

ore than 100 experts and scholars attended the 2022 Annual Conference on Postgraduate Education in Translation on November 26 at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).
The conference mainly talks about postgraduate education in translation degrees, and further improves the quality and efficiency of it. This meeting focuses on the establishment of Doctoral Degree in Translation (DTI), and its relevant training standards is still studied and formulated.
Jiang Feng, Chair of SISU's University Council and Vice Chairman of China National Committee for Graduate Education of Translation and Interpreting (GETI), discussed on the doctoral education of the translation major from five aspects including the application standards, enrollment standards, graduation standards, direction of talent training and core content to DTI pilot units.
He said translation education should focus on serving the country's needs for translation and strategic communication, and cultivate high-level application-oriented translation leaders to meet social requirements.
“The opening of DTI marks a new era for the cultivation of translation talents,” said Huang Youyi, the Executive Vice President of Translators Association of China (TAC), director of the Expert Committee of GETI, and former deputy director and chief editor of China International Publishing Group (CIPG).
In recent years, the importance of professional degree education continues to increase, the setting of professional degree in translation has become a powerful way to promote the training of translation talents with Chinese characteristics.
Weng Tiehui, member of the Communist Party of China Leading Group and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, expressed that high-level translation talents should be interdisciplinary talents, so as to better tell Chinese stories and spread Chinese voices.
Huang also advised that high-level translators should have good political character, superb ability about translation, cross-cultural communication ability, professional field knowledge, broad international vision and proficient translation skills.
Du Zhanyuan, director of CIPG and president of TAC, suggested on the construction of translation talents, "Translation work should focus on the accurate translation and interpretation of Chinese theories, roads, systems and cultures, and strengthen theoretical research and practical innovation."
At the opening ceremony, CIPG and SISU signed a strategic cooperation agreement to further deepen cooperation among industry, university and research institutes in the field of translation and international communication.
Li Yansong, president of SISU, thanked the Ministry of Education and CIPG for their support and guidance, said that SISU has taken "Interpret the World, Translate the Future" as the school-running philosophy goals to reflect the fundamental value orientation of serving cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries with translation as the link, and promoting the mutual learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations.
The conference is hosted by China National Committee for Graduate Education of Translation and Interpreting and the Working Committee of Translation Professional Degrees of The Chinese Society of Academic Degrees and Graduate Education.
