O

ver 20 universities around the world attended the establishment of China-Arab Consortium of Universities Exchange Mechanism in Jordan’s capital Amman on Sept.19, which was co-organized by Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). The mechanism aims to enhance cooperation in various fields including health, food security and youth development.

An agreement, signed between SISU and Jordan University in the ceremony, included specific measures for deeper cooperation in academic research and talent exchanges.

Li Yansong, president of SISU, further explained that SISU would increase academic conferences and research funds by taking advantage of its long-time academic research on Arab, as well as its “Multilingual +” talent training system.

SISU adopts a kind of distinctive philosophy of developing inter-disciplinary talents, by combining language and major studies. It also embodies a new cultivation mode for liberal art, which advocates interdisciplinary integration.

SISU, one participator of “China-Arab Universities Cooperation Initiative”, will actively respond to the mechanism.

According to Li, SISU plans to support students from both Chinese and Arab universities to attend international summer schools and training programs, as well as prompt communication in various fields such as science, sports and art.

Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University also attended the ceremony. Amr Ezzat Salama, secretary general of the Association of Arab Universities, said that Arab and Chinese universities should actively collaborate to address the global challenges of climate change and sustainable development.

The Chinese secretariat of the Exchange Mechanism was based in SISU and was launched on June 20, 2023.

Founded in 2022, the first China-Arab States Summit initiated communication of young people and colleges between China and Arab. “China-Arab Universities Cooperation Initiative” was set up in the summit.
