    SISU is known for being one of the earliest institutions where China’s higher education in foreign languages took shape.

    hanghai International Studies University (SISU) was included in the list of 137 universities for “Double First-Class” project released by China’s Ministry of Education on September 21, 2017.

    This is one of the most significant projects initiated by the Chinese government for the growth of top-notch universities and disciplines in China. The project includes building world-class universities with Chinese characteristics and first-class disciplines at a global level.

    SISU, with its traditional strength in the discipline of foreign language and literature, is now endowed with a great opportunity for sustained excellence and further growth.

    In the framework of the project, SISU will endeavor to develop a multi-discipline composed of foreign language and literature, journalism and communication, and political science. Benchmarked against the highest international standards, SISU will strive to integrate the excellence and the potentiality of the three disciplines and build them into a well-structured discipline cluster.

     

    SISU’s pillar discipline: Foreign Language and Literature

    SISU’s discipline of foreign language and literature has leading strength in China thanks to its remarkable history, academic excellence, and domestic and global presence.

    • SISU has a comprehensive educational system of B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs.

     SISU offers courses in 32 modern languages and a series of classical and constructed languages.

    • SISU has 3 national key disciplines: English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, and Arabic Language and Literature.

    • SISU ranks 2nd in the third round China’s National Disciplinary Assessment (2012).

    What will SISU do to become “double first-class”?

    SISU will participate actively and deliver impact in world academia and scholarship, working towards its vision as a world-class university based on international studies, featuring its distinctive contributions to area studies and global knowledge. SISU will:

    •  prioritize the cooperation and exchanges with universities and institutions around the world and continuously streamline the mechanism of internationalization on the level of student exchange, faculty exchange, research collaboration and any other types of institutional cooperation that may benefit both sides.

      maintain its strength in the field of language and literature, giving new impetus to its leading excellence in the teaching and research in linguistics, literary studies and translation studies;

     bring about improvements in university institutions to facilitate unhindered research and teaching exchanges between its various disciplines;

      develop the disciplines of journalism, communication and political science, promote research in area studies and international public opinion, drawing on the resources from a mix of disciplines;

      implement SISU's “Multilingual+” Initiative, providing SISU students with “Multilingual+” competence.
