  • Volunteers’ working hours from week 1-20 (March 30~Aug 14)

A

group of volunteers consisting of 574 students from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has interpreted 772 times for foreigners in China who could get Covid-19 vaccinated since March 29, 2021.

The volunteers of different majors and grades have served at 17 Covid-19 vaccine sites to translate mainly in English for foreigners in Shanghai in the last five months.

“Many foreigners said they were surprised and thankful to find volunteers being ready to help there. A Pakistani who got Covid-19 vaccinated there even wanted to friend me on WeChat!” A SISU volunteer Hu Zhuobing said.

As these Covid-19 vaccine sites are located far from the university, the volunteers who are on duty in the afternoon often need to set out early in the morning and return till late at night.

They are estimated to have travelled 50,871 kilometers totally to and from the covid-19 vaccine sites – comparable to 1.27 times the length of the Equator - and have worked 5,108.75 hours totally (take round-trip transportation into account) - comparable to 213 full days.

A SISU postgraduate Wang Rui has already kept on volunteering at about 10 vaccination sites in spite of high temperatures. “I enjoy communicating with people from different countries, and it's great to be able to contribute to pandemic control with what I've learned,” she said.

In addition to the offline volunteer team, 504 volunteers from seven majors including the Russian major and the Arabic major are engaged in multilingual interpretation by call for two Covid-19 vaccination sites in Putuo district every Tuesday and Friday afternoon.

1,180 SISU students have offered online translation services to medical staff and expats in Shanghai in 27 languages, taking phone calls lasting about 6,050 minutes and translating about 230,000 words.

The students also joined other translation projects during the pandemic, such as special line for the work resumption of Japanese and Korean enterprises, and got volunteering awards.
