rofessor Zhang Zhenbang, one of the founders of the English subject of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), passed away on Sep.25, 2019 at the age of 101 in Shanghai.
The series of A New English Grammar Coursebook compiled by Professor Zhang has had more than 3.3 million copies so far, which is one of the academic works of extreme influence in China.
Based on practical cases, the books brought up a new grammar system which has been widely used in English teaching. They also redefined multiple grammatical concepts and clarified the relationships between grammar and context.
Professor Zhang has realized there needed to be a change as China has always adopted traditional English grammar system for many years. When interviewed by The Paper, he talked about the reason that he decided to compile this book. ”We need to complete a book with modern grammar system, which is convenient for Chinese to learn,” he said.
Professor Zhang’s academic views were introduced into textbooks, which greatly helped English learners improve their language ability. The books also assisted them to grow into qualified talents for the needs of international communication and the "Go globally" strategy.
“Professor Zhang’s book is not only a textbook, but also a key for many people to learn grammar,” said Lin Haoming, a graduate student from SISU ‘s School of English Studies.
