SISUer and 75th Anniversary | Resilience and Growth: My Journey at SISU

19 December 2024 | By Jiang Keyu (蒋珂彧) | SISU/School of Jornalism and Communication/Vieira

As the wheels of my luggage rumbled, I, a vigorous freshman girl, strode into SISU after waving goodbye to my worried parents. Grinning from ear to ear, I couldn't wait anymore to witness how everything introduced in the booklet would be at my fingertips, like the huge library, the large-scale gym, and the rippling mirror-like lake. Upon thoughts of the vivid campus life popping into my mind, I could hardly conceal my merriment and headed straight for the dormitory.

Scarcely had I pushed open the door when my spirits sagged. My dormitory was on the fifth floor, making it a hassle to go up and down daily. Worse, the room was situated right next to the public restroom, where constant noise and an unspeakable odor lingered, leaving me caught off guard. "It must be okay." I still murmured to myself for reassurance, though luck didn’t seem to smile on me from then on.

Soon as if in the blink of an eye, challenges approached. The constant chatter and laughter of my roommates made it nearly impossible to find peace, even late into the night. What's more, privacy, once taken for granted, became a wild dream, as almost every corner of the dorm was shared, and what killed the last ray of hope was my dwindling study concentration and efficiency. At that moment, I was totally out of rhythm with the campus and at the edge of breaking down.

One morning, exhausted and frustrated after another sleepless night, I came across a TED Talk video while scrolling through my phone. The speaker, brimming with energy and optimism, shared stories of overcoming adversity and finding strength in unexpected places. It was then that I got an epiphany -- I myself needed to embrace challenges and bounce back with great resilience.

Seed of determination firmly planted into my heart, I decided to cope with dormitory matters first. Encouraged by my parents, I mustered the courage to talk with my roommates, which I had previously found embarrassing. Admittedly, thanks to the frank communication bridging the conceptual gap, we established several rules, with which the dormitory became friendly yet structured. Meanwhile, since the originate desire for an immersive campus life always lingered through my mind, I gradually fixed my attention on diverse clubs, where I built irreplaceable friendships and raised a never-drained passion to embrace SISU life despite its challenges.

Time ticking away, I noticed subtle changes in myself. It turned out that my once annoying roommates could be so lovely as we girls chatted like tiny warblers twittering. All the frustration and stress that had been building up inside me seemed to disappear, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.

I, anticipating whole-new experiences, entered SISU campus excitedly, but was overwhelmed by unexpected dilemma. Tough period as it was, I plucked up my courage and strove to gear myself for the challenges around, knowing that my SISU journey had just only begun.

Wandering on the SISU campus and bathed in the amber-like sunshine, I was enveloped in an atmosphere of ease. Through my experiences, I gained an insight into the virtue of resilience, which endowed me with the power to navigate through dynamic situations ahead and savor the enchanting melody of growth and life.
